There are not many video games that features a detailed title credit so it was nice to see “Deus Ex: Human Revolution” team came up with one. The title is mostly CG animation and basically fills in the story of what happened after an incident occurred to the main character of the game, Adam Jensen. It’d be hard to talk about this without divulging the storyline a little bit, so if you haven’t played the game yet, it’s recommended that you skip anything past this paragraph.
The credit opens with an attempt to save Adam Jensen’s life after he was critically injured due to the incident mentioned above. Adam’s savior is his augmentation-advocate employer, Dr. David Sarif of Sarif Industry, who decides to augment Adam with various cybernetics enhancement to his body. This basically sets the whole storyline of whether human augmentation is ethical or something that humans should not be playing with.
The animation alternates between showing molecular scans of Adam’s skeleton and various surgical procedures to facilitate cybernetic enhancements. Through it all, Adam can be seen writhing in agony from the surgery while his mind shows flashes of his last moments with his ex-girlfriend. This is a very simple and clear opening with little to no line work in most of the frames shown in the entire credit, relying mostly on the CG to tell the story.
As usual, sound design is extremely important in the execution of the opening. The opening features a music titled “Opening credit”, composed by Michael McCann. It is mixed with sound bites of Sarif and his crew of doctors talking about the procedures, as well as ambient noises such as heartbeats, needle insertion, and augmentation tech sparking to life. The result is an animation that encapsulates the human augmentation theme of Deus Ex.
